Root canal therapy is a treatment to remove pulp from the inside of a tooth and its roots.  Pulp is the tooth's nerve and blood supply, once infected, it often transmits pain and must be removed via root canal therapy.

Root canals are often needed when decay travels deep into the tooth. Other problems including trauma or repeated dental treatment can lead to root canal therapy.

The procedure involves removing the decay and pulp from the canals, cleaning, disinfecting, and sealing the canals. In most cases, a crown needs to be placed over the tooth to protect the now brittle tooth from further damage.
